3 Things Thursday: goal, weights, heat.

#1  I've decided that I will share my goal for Disney World Marathon.  I've been hesitant about telling people because I afraid I won't achieve my goal.  Anyway, I want to beat 4:00.  I'll be so happy to get 3:59:59 or faster!!  My first/only marathon I did was Marine Corp in October '09 and I finished in 4:12.  So, I think this is a good goal for me.
#2  To help me reach my goal, I've decided to work much harder in my training.  I am doing more weights and targeting my core, back, arms, and legs.  I will do this, I WILL DO THIS!
#3  It's freaking hot outside.  We are under a heat advisory right now and I'll be super glad when it cools off.  I'm ready for pretty fall weather!

Today, since it was so hot and I got up at 11 am, I went to the gym for a run and weights.  I ran 4.5 miles on the treadmill.  I did hill repeats and 2.5 miles were up hill.  It was rough but I LOVE HILLS!!  :)  Hills outside are always more fun than on a treadmill though.  Then I worked my legs, core, and arms.

Question:  Do you follow a 4 or 5 month training plan for a marathon?  I did 5 for my last one but the training plan I was going to do this time is 4.  What do you recommend?
153 days until Disney!

  4. I have always followed a 16 training plan so roughly 3 1/2 months although my first I had an extra month of "base building" where I built up to average weekly runs of at least 5 miles and felt comfortable starting my long runs in the 8-12 mile range.

And for the record, I think you'll hit 4 hours easy peasy! Just stay focused and listen to your body. Ease up when you're feeling tired and take advantage of all the lessons you learned from the last cycle.

  7. Good luck on your goal. I hope you do it! I want to do a sub-4, but right now I don't think I have the time to train proper.

  9. You are working so hard I’m sure you’ll get under 04:00. Good luck with that! I don’t think there is much difference between 4 and 5 months. Maybe if it was your first marathon, but not for this one.

  10. Good luck with the goal! I think it's great to get it out there. You did great on your first marathon so I'm sure if you really focus you'll be able to reach your goal. For the training plan, I imagine it wouldn't matter on the time as long as your base is pretty good.

  11. I don't like posting goals either. 4 hours is doable, as long as you don't keep stopping to get a picture with Disney Characters.

I've yet to do a stand alone marathon, but 5 months seems like a long time. You need to be careful not to burn out!

  12. Hi Leah! So glad you found my blog, I am glad to have found yours. I have only run five marathons and I am leaning to a shorter training cycles long as you have solid base miles I think you can do a 16 week program. Good luck on your goal!!!

  13. I KNOW...me and you both have a 'slight' problem with becoming obsessed with things. But HEY! I would MUCH MUCH MUCH rather be obsessive about certain things than be like most other people lol....eeeek!

We're HUGE Disney fans!!! I've done the half a few times, also. Good luck on your training! I'm a runner who took a few months off, but now I'm back full force! Gonna follow you!

  16. Hi Leah,

Thanks for visiting my blog today. I did my first marathon in 4:15, so I am trying to beat 4:00 too! We can do this!

Good luck with your training, I did five the first time around and am only doing 4 this time, so we'll both see how it works out.

  17. Love your blog and your attitude! Keep up the good work. As for marathon training, my experience has been that more 20 milers is better, but with plenty of recovery time in between. I would go with a 5 month plan so you can get several in but still have plenty of time in between them so that you aren't skirting injury. Good luck - can't wait to follow your progress!

  18. I'd say to have fun at Disney --- but of course you will!! My friend was running it one year with the same goal of under 4 ... and sure enough I do believe he was 3:59:58 or something like that. Hopefully you'll have good weather. I hear last year people were actually having chunks of ice form in their hair while running. Yikes!!
